In the Gulf of Mexico caught a giant underwater beetle

Recently, the Internet got photos of unusual meter underwater insect, which was captured from the sea of workers one of the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. First, the scientists said it was a fabrication. But recently, scientists from the National evolutionary center in North Carolina said that the insect may be present.
Craig McClain of Evolutionary center said that the photos could be a giant wood louse that lives in the deep depressions.
"This is probably an insect caught in the hollows of the Gulf of Mexico, because there is already caught similar instances. Moreover, this insect has a length of about one meter, but there is evidence that they had seen, and large insects somewhere in a half meters," - said the scientist.

Such organisms called isopods. They live at great depths, and can grow up to 2-3 meters.
Researcher Simferopol University Vasily Kernozenko said that these kinds of insects there are about 10. "They live at depths greater than 500 meters, and eat the remains of fish and shellfish, which fall to the bottom of almost every year to a new kind of insect. On land, they also live. A well-known relative of this species, this is a common wood louse, which lives in soil and under the old boards "- he said.
On the surface of the sea, they almost do not rise.
"Therefore, it is rarely met with the fishermen. But occasionally they are caught in nets for lobsters, because they fall below the trawl fishery, and therefore they fall and isopods, which have been raised closer to the surface in search of food."
